Henry joined Trinity in 1985 as a Lecturer and quickly established himself as a leading figure in engineering mechanics and dynamics. His research spans non-linear vibration systems, acoustics, fluid mechanics, and environmental noise, with over 75 publications influencing both academic and industrial practice. As Head of School from 2016 to 2022, Henry steered the School through transformative years, including the planning and development of the E3 Learning Foundry.

Beyond his technical achievements, Henry is celebrated for his mentorship and teaching. Generations of engineers credit him for instilling clarity, curiosity, and confidence. Many of his former students now lead research and policy in Ireland and internationally, a testament to his enduring impact. His leadership style, calm, collegial, and visionary, has left a lasting imprint on Trinity’s academic community.

The Festschrift, Perspectives in Engineering Mechanics and Dynamics, features essays from colleagues and former students reflecting on Henry’s contributions to acoustics research, sustainable transport, and engineering education. Edited by Prof Ciaran K. Simms & Prof Garret E. O’Donnell, it also captures his personal qualities: humility, generosity, and a passion for music and sailing.

Speaking about Professor Rice’s lasting impact, Professor in Biomechanics and of of the editors of the Festschrift, Ciaran Simms commented:

Henry was an excellent colleague, and a mentor to me. This Festschrift in his honour is also a partial snapshot of our Department, and the papers included here tangentially describe aspects of the changes of teaching, physical infrastructure, administration and research funding over five decades in one of the busiest Departments in the University.

As Henry embarks on retirement, the School of Engineering extends heartfelt thanks for his decades of dedication and wishes him every happiness in the years ahead.
