Instructor Guide: How to set up a Student Video Submission Assignment
You can use the Panopto Video Assignments feature to allow students to record videos and submit them using the Blackboard assignment tool. This enables the creation of video assignments through a streamlined workflow. When you create a Panopto Video Assignment, an associated Student Submission folder automatically gets created in your module's Panopto Folder - students cannot see other students' submissions within this folder by default.
Create a Panopto Student Video Submission Assignment in Blackboard
In the Blackboard Ultra module that you want to create a video assignment for, select the plus + icon in the Module Content section and then select Create from the menu that appears. Under the Assessment section in the Create Item pop-out menu, select Assignment.
Create the assignment as you would in Blackboard Ultra, typically prompting students to submit a Blackboard video assignment and then select Save. Students will be able to embed a video presentation within their assignment submission.
To provide your students with the steps necessary to submit a Panopto video, you may want to share a link to our article, 'How to Submit a Video Assignment in Blackboard Ultra.'
Select the Add Content button that appears within the assignment. Then, in the text editor that appears, select the plus symbol icon and choose the Add Third Party Tools option from the dropdown menu that appears. Click on Panopto Student Submission.

Important Note: This will open the Panopto Student Submission window, which creates an assignment subfolder within the module's Panopto folder. Students can use this subfolder to create and edit their video recordings prior to submission. Students cannot see each other's work in this folder. When the student is ready to submit, their recording is moved from the assignment's subfolder to a Student Submissions subfolder for review and marking via the Blackboard grade centre.
Information for Students for recording: Student Submission
- Students will use the Panopto Student Submission tool to record their videos.
- They can save drafts of their work in their personal My Folder location within their Blackboard Panopto account to revisit the video and make edits.
- Once they are satisfied with their video, students will submit it via the Panopto Student Submission tool, which will transfer the final version from the interim Assignments subfolder (within their my Panopto folder) to the "Student Submissions" folder. Why not show the interim subfolder? The assignments subfolder may not be visible to students, as it's a subfolder of the module's parent Panopto folder, which the lecturer may have hidden. This is because the Panopto parent folder contains the lecturer's lecture recordings, which they may not want students to see. It's recommended that students use their "My Folder" for drafts to avoid confusion.
Finalise the Assignment Settings:
- Close the Panopto Student Submission window by clicking on the X button to close, and the Add Content window.
- Add any additional instructions for students in the instructions field in the assignment window. We advise you to include the URL for the Instruction Guide for Students Submitting their Video Assignments.
- Set the due date, point marks (always mark out of 100 if you are using Grades Journey), and submission details (allowing one attempt is recommended).
- Click the Submit button to create and save the student video assignment, completing your setup.
Grading the Assignment
Open the assignment where you see an ungraded submission.
Select the submission you want to mark.
Under Submission Content, their Panopto video assignment should appear embedded. Proceed with grading the assignments, providing feedback, and posting/ releasing marks to students.
Additional Information
Notes:
- When drafting their submission, students create their videos in their My Folder (private to them) and can continue editing them until they click Submit. Once they submit their video, the file is copied into a "Student Submissions" subfolder within your module's Panopto folder, thereby preventing further editing. Important Note: We recommend that they save their work-in-progress video recording to their own Panopto "My Folder" until they are ready to submit the video assignment. The added advantage is that the student keeps a copy of their video recording in their My Folder Panopto account for future reference.
- Students can only see their submissions , not each other's, by default within the Student Assignment subfolder in your module's Panopto folder.
- The best way to grade student submissions is using the Grade Centre, as you would with a standard Blackboard assignment.
- Steps for your students are available in the Student Help tab. There is also an Instructor Guide: How to Set Up a Student Video Submission Assignment in Blackboard available for download above, which can be attached to the assignment.
- Please consider the type of content students are asked to create and be mindful of potential risks associated with video assignments. Generally, the Panopto Student Video Submission option allows students to create recorded presentations. Consequently, there may be data protection (GDPR) or privacy-related issues if students are asked to record videos that involve them or third parties. Students should always be provided with clear guidance and instruction before content creation. For example, avoid tasks that require students to create videos containing sensitive or confidential information. Instructors should provide students with specific instructions regarding the recording of confidential data or special categories of personal data. Essentially, this type of data should not be recorded. For further information, please refer to the Special Category Data page on the Data Protection website.
- Suppose a student video assignment contains personal data of other individuals (e.g., a visual or audio recording of a person or other identifiable information). In that case, the student should obtain permission/consent from relevant individuals before recording. Permission should be obtained in a recordable format and retained on file.
- Caution should always be exercised when recording video assignments, and it may be advisable to have students run their ideas by you if they differ from a standard presentation. Moreover, staff should review content and delete any unnecessary, excessive, or inappropriate data that may be included in a video assignment.
- Further information is available from the College's Data Protection Officer at dataprotection@tcd.ie or via the College's Data Protection website at https://www.tcd.ie/dataprotection/.
- Not all students will be comfortable creating and editing videos of themselves; consider alternative assessments for those who may not feel confident in their ability to produce a video.
- Panopto provides the Student Video Submission tool as part of their video hosting solution - if College ever changes to another video hosting provider (for example, as part of a tender process approximately every five years), we cannot guarantee that the new video hosting provider will have an equivalent assignment feature - however, staff would be notified well in advance of any change and workarounds may still be possible.

Panopto Video Assignments Prerequisites
You can combine Panopto with the Blackboard Assignments tool to enable a streamlined workflow where students can create videos using Panopto Capture, which you can then grade using the standard Blackboard assignments options.
Prerequisites:
Panopto Assignments Folder: When you create a Panopto Student Submission Assignment, a dedicated Panopto Assignments subfolder is automatically generated in your module's Panopto folder. This folder is secure and contains students' video recordings prior to submission. It's important to note that students cannot view one another's submissions in this folder, thereby ensuring their work remains private. Prerequisite: Ensure you have added Panopto to your Blackboard module.
Submission Process for Students: Students will use Panopto to create a video recording, which will be initially saved in the 'Assignments' folder. The video is automatically moved into a student submission subfolder once a student is ready to submit their final version. The instructor can access and grade the videos in the Blackboard grade centre. It's crucial to note that once a video is submitted, students no longer have access to this final version, ensuring the integrity of the grading process.
Important Note: The student may wish to edit their videos multiple times before submission; therefore, it's recommended that they save these drafts to their own "My Folder" within their Blackboard Panopto account. For more details on this process, refer to the Student Guide for creating and submitting video assignments.
Grading Video Assignments: The Module Panopto Folder Hierarchy: Panopto Parent Module Folder -> Assignments subfolder -> Student Submissions subfolder. The lecturer can view all the student video assignment submissions via the Blackboard Gradebook column. The lecturer can play back the videos and assign marks and comments for that assignment.
