A Knowledge Centre that sees the global carbon neutrality and energy security challenge as a complex, trans disciplinary and multi-faceted permanent subject matter in its own right.

This follows EU recognition of the “Low Carbon Technologies” concept by the Fit for 55 legislative package. “Fit for 55” refers to the EU’s target of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. The proposed legislative package aims to bring EU legislation in line with the 2030 goal.

To provide new knowledge, key to the affordable urgent deployment of massively scalable technologies to decarbonize society, by implementing the Trinity Living Research Excellence Strategy.

We carry out multi- and inter-disciplinary coupled research on science, technology, behavioural change and social innovation concepts that can affordably reduce greenhouse gas emissions, without creating significant other negative consequences.

73% of global greenhouse gas emissions are due to energy utilisation (IEA 2019). There is an urgent need to securitize global energy utilisation, whilst also decarbonizing our economies. 50% of the emissions reductions necessary to reach net zero will arise from emerging technologies that are still being developed (World Economic Forum). Achieving the creation and massive deployment of these innovations requires multi- and inter-disciplinary research and cross-industry collaboration, with significant cost and legislative support enabled by change to government policy and regulation.

A Trinity Centre for Low Carbon Technologies is needed to focus dispersed Trinity research and training capacities in this space, and cross-fertilise research questions, researchers and ideas among Trinity researchers contributing to the E3 research and teaching missions. The Centre will facilitate interaction among Trinity researchers by organising our expertise on research into bottom-up, and top-down challenges. The Centre will provide an essential shop-front to engage with external stakeholders including government departments and agencies, the public, industry, enterprise, philanthropic and representative bodies.
