MSc in International Politics

The MSc in International Politics at Trinity College Dublin is a one-year full-time (or two-year part-time) taught programme designed for graduates who want to understand and critically analyse global and domestic political dynamics. Course Overview

Graduates of the MSc in International Politics are prepared for a wide range of research-related careers in policy, business, law, media, government, and international organisations, as well as doctoral study.

There is strong demand for professionals who can apply rigorous research methods to address global challenges - from conflict and governance to economic inequality and climate policy. Non-EU students may be eligible to remain and work in Ireland under the Stamp 1G visa scheme.

Course Structure

Students take a combination of core and elective modules designed to deepen their understanding of international relations and political analysis.

  • First Term: Core modules in International Politics, International Conflict, and Research Design.
  • Second Term: Core training in Quantitative Methods plus a range of optional modules (topics vary annually).
  • Third Term: Dissertation research (11,000 words), supported by a dissertation advisor and seminar series.

Part-Time Option

The MSc in International Politics can also be taken on a part-time basis over two years. Coursework is completed across both years, and the dissertation is submitted at the end of the second year.

Please note that classes are scheduled during normal working hours (morning and afternoon seminars), and timetables are finalised shortly before each term begins. Given the required reading and research workload, it may not be feasible to pursue the part-time MSc alongside full-time employment.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants should normally hold an upper second-class (2.1) honours degree or equivalent from an established university. A background in social sciences is an advantage but not essential. Degrees in Political Science, Economics, European Studies, History, Sociology, Business, or Law are particularly relevant.

International applicants should hold a GPA of at least 3.3 out of 4 (or equivalent).
