Are you interested in how political decisions are made, why institutions matter, and how ideas influence public life? Joint Honours Political Science allows you to develop analytical, research, and communication skills while exploring key themes such as democracy, political behaviour, international relations, and political theory. These skills open pathways to careers in fields such as public service, policy, journalism, international organisations, law, advocacy, and academia.
Course Structure
Students can combine Political Science with one of the following subjects:
- Geography
- History
- Law
- Social Policy
The programme offers flexible pathways, allowing students to specialise in one or both subjects through Single Honours, Major with Minor, or Joint Honours routes.
In First Year, students are introduced to core concepts in politics, society, and the economy through modules such as Introduction to Political Science, Introduction to Sociology, and Introduction to Economics.
In Second Year, students take core Political Science modules including History of Political Thought, International Relations, Comparative Politics.
In Third and Fourth Year, students select from a wide range of modules. Topics typically offered include: Research Methods, Irish Politics, Democracy and Development, European Union Politics, Political Institutions of the US, Political Psychology, Political Violence, Political Theory: Contemporary Topics, Issues in Contemporary Politics, Contemporary International Relations, African Politics, Autocracy, Economic Inequality and Democracy.
