Trinity College Dublin heralded the beginning of the annual Trinity Week on Monday May 11th last with the announcement of three Honorary Fellows, 21 new Fellows and 83 new Scholars of the College. The ceremony is one of the oldest and most colourful at Trinity College and marks the beginning of the annual Trinity Week, a long established celebration of College life.
The announcement was made by the Provost of Trinity, Dr John Hegarty, surrounded by members of the Board of the College in full academic gowns on the steps of the Public Theatre. Students and staff celebrated the occasion with colleagues, friends and families in Front Square.
School of Medicine students celebrate being awarded scholarships by TCD.
Respected historian and long-standing RTÉ broadcaster, Dr John Bowman, was among three candidates who received Honorary Fellowships to the College. Best known for his presentation of current affairs and historical programmes on RTÉ radio and television and for his role in chairing public debates and interviewing public figures, Dr Bowman obtained a PhD in Political Science from Trinity College Dublin.
Research achievement or scholarship of a high order is the primary qualification for Fellowship, along with evidence of the candidate’s contribution to the academic life of the College and effective record of teaching. Scholars are elected annually in various subjects as the result of an examination held in Trinity term. This year to celebrate Trinity Week, the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science, has put together a programme of symposia, events, films, debates, trails and workshops around the theme of ‘energy and sustainability’. Trinity Week will run from May 11th – 15th and all events are free and open to the public. A full programme of events can be found on www.tcd.ie/trinityweek.
